Nestled in our collection at Behruz Studio is a truly extraordinary piece that captures the essence of Persian artistry and heritage. This is the Khan’s Carpet, a Bakhtiari triclinium or audience carpet from South Central Persia, dated back to 1902 AD. Crafted to the special order of Hessamaddin Khan Bakhtiari, this stunning piece is a testament to the intricate craftsmanship and rich cultural history of the Bakhtiari people.

Dimensions and Design

Measuring a grand 404 x 315 cm (13’3″ x 10’4″), this carpet was designed for a specific room known as a “Tallar,” where the Khan would entertain his honoured guests. The design is a mesmerizing blend of traditional patterns and the weaver’s creative expression. Each of the four sections of the rug could stand alone as a beautifully balanced piece, yet together they weave a tapestry of cultural significance and visual splendour.

Historical Context

The carpet’s inscribed date places it within a period of remarkable events in Persian history, from 1865 to 1930, a time that saw the rise and fall of the Great Khans of the Bakhtiari. These carpets are extremely rare, and this particular piece is considered of museum quality, embodying both historical and artistic value.

Craftsmanship and Materials

Bakhtiari carpets are celebrated for their durability and intricate designs, often featuring geometric patterns and stylized motifs inspired by nature. The Khan’s Carpet exemplifies this, with a vivid array of colours and patterns that tell the story of the Bakhtiari tribe. The rustic background of the central piece is a deliberate design choice, setting it apart from the surrounding motifs and highlighting the weaver’s meticulous attention to detail.
