Como by Design will kick-off with the sunset Garden Party Gala preview on Thursday 18 October. A program of seminars will also follow from Friday 19 October with special guest speakers including UK-based international luminary Nina Campbell and Robyn Holt, former Conde Nast CEO for Australia and Russia. The first seminar speakers will be Sydney/Melbourne based international designer Thomas Hamel, renowned garden designer Paul Bangay OAM, Sydney architect, Michael Bell. They will be hosted by Justin Hewitt of the event’s chosen charity, The Prince’s Trust Australia. Another notable guest speaker will be US-based Philip Bershad, President of one of the world’s leading wallcovering companies, Phillip Jeffries USA. He will present on the art of handcrafted natural, textured and specialty wallcoverings.
Como by Design is the brainchild of Tigger Hall, a leading light of the Australian interior design industry. Tigger’s aim is to bring the design community together in a celebration of creativity and to demonstrate the wonderful design talent in the Victorian design community, all within the magnificent setting of Como House. Built in 1847 and acquired by the National Trust in 1959, Como House is one of Australia’s most historic homes.
“It has long been a dream of mine to organise a project such as this. I have been working on the idea for several years. Early in 2017 I met with Nina Campbell in London to discuss the project, and this meeting really galvanised the idea and I got to work”, Tigger said.
“The motivation behind Como by Design is to bring the Melbourne Design Community together and to show the quality of design in the Melbourne. We have such amazing talent in this country, I feel so proud to be a part of it, I want to create a platform to showcase the unique and bespoke talents in Melbourne”, Tigger added.
The “Show House Event” format has met with huge success in New York, Los Angeles and London, attracting large and diverse audiences, showcasing local designer talent and opening historic properties to new and expanding audiences. The most notable examples are Kips Bay Show House in New York, which has been running for more than 40 years, Grey Stone Mansion in LA and The Holiday House in London.
“It’s about good design in a space which is not your own, the challenge of working with what you have and having “carte-blanche” over the space. I am passionate to show how decorating can be done in a classical setting, using the spaces as they do in Europe incorporating antique pieces alongside modern pieces showing the longevity and an evolved space. It is about good design with a focus on decorating”, Tigger said.
To launch the celebrations at Como by Design, the 18 October Gala Garden Party will be created and managed by Styled by Louisa Curtis, Michael Strownix and Cookes Food, in partnership with Laurent Perrier, Rob Dolan Wines and Capi. Premium brands are integral to elevate this event as one of the most glamorous parties of the Spring Season, a social event which we anticipate will attract 500 guests.
Como by Design proudly supports the National Trust and The Prince’s Trust Australia, of which Thomas Hamel and Paul Bangay are Ambassadors.
