TALKS | AAADA ANTIQUES FAIR SYDNEY

August 18

A short history of Chinese ceramics in Sydney – from Jingdezhen and back again Dr. Iain Clark, The Ceramic Collectors Society Saturday 18 August, 11.30am Location: Talks area Iain will talk about the journey of Chinese ceramics to Australia, finishing on a young Australian potter who recently exhibited in Jingzehen. Australia’s Crown Jewels Trevor Hancock Saturday 18, 12:30pm Location: Talks area In the brief period 1855 to 1900, Australian goldsmiths created some of the world’s finest jewellery  gold work. Now due to changing tastes and economic depressions, very few fine pieces are available. Most examples are in Australian Institutions and there is little chance for collectors to attain an example. Nothing draws the comments more than a fine examples of Australia’s gold rush period. Tasting Tasmaniana – Furniture, pottery, silver and scrimshaw Presented by Colin Thomas Saturday 18, 2:30pm Location: Talks area Tasmania or Van Diemen’s Land as it  was originally known has a very rich cultural heritage.    Many of the convicts and later free settlers “transferred”  to this colony prospered significantly in the early 1800’s and used the natural resources of this unique island state to produce exceptionally high quality furniture and other decorative arts which were exhibited in the great exhibitions of the world and later in Australia and Tasmania itself.     Due to the significant wealth generated from whaling and agricultural endeavours the local residents built some magnificent homes many of which are now listed on Australian Heritage Registers.   These homes had to be furnished and decorated.   Hence “Tasmaniana”, furniture, pottery, silver and scrimshaw constructed from either natural or imported resources abounded in the early 19th century. Valuing furniture based on colour, quality and condition Presented by John Hawkins Saturday 18, 3:30pm Location: On his stand Entry to all the talks is free, but you must have a valid entry ticket to the Fair.
