These woven and sometimes embroidered rugs, known locally as ‘gilzai’ are woven on narrow tripod looms, they weave long strips some 25 cm wide. The finished strips, sometimes packed with a multitude of complex, ancient motifs, are cut and joined, creating a textile to whatever dimension required. The ‘gilzais’ are traditionally woven in the Uzbek villages to the west of Masar-i-Sharif, near Balkh and Aq Chah, but are also produced in most Uzbek communities. This piece is double sided (two woven surfaces) showing the same design on both sides which is most unusual.
