1350 "Madonna della seggiola" oil on board in elaborately carved and gilded frame.
Italy. 19th century.
The original Madonna della seggiola or Madonna della sedia by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ while the young John the Bapist devoutly watches. It is housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence.
This Madonna does not have the strict geometrical form and linea style of his earlier Florentine treatments of the same subject. Instead, the warmer colours seem to suggest the influence of Titian and Raphael's rival Sebastiano del Piombo.
