Stained rosewood’ elbow chair attributed to Gillows c1820: $2,485;
Dimensions – (0.82 x 0.54 x 0.6m)
A Gonçalo Alves flower table attributed to Gillows c1850: $9,485
Dimensions – (0.72 x 0.61 x 0.61m)
This rosewood grained beech chair presents typical Gillow decorative features: the incised ‘frond like motif’, on the crest rail, as noted by Susan Stuart (Gillows of Lancaster & London, pub ACC 2008; Vol I pp.223), and the corner seat rail palmette style decoration, again noted by Stuart, Vol I pp.222.
This Gonçalo Alves (or Albuera wood) flower table is very similar to a signed Gillows wine table illustrated by Susan Stuart (Vol I, pp.338); the stem detail is remarkably consistent as, are the legs, though the terminations on Stuart’s example are carved lions paws; both feet feature concealed castors.
