Description

An exceptional Chinese Blue & White Clobbered ginger Jar, on Apple Green Ground This Chinese Qianlong period blue and white ginger jar was “clobbered” or enamelled with a sensational apple green ground combined with iron red and then decorated with exotic pagodas, river scenes, mountains, stylised flowers, fruit and catfish all outlined with gilding. During the 18th & early 19th centuries, often blue and white Chinese export was sent to Holland and England to be “clobbered” or enamelled with colour to enhance their decorative appeal.  Colourful Imari porcelain was very popular at that time and was much more expensive than Chinese blue and white ware.  European potters saw the benefits of adding colour or clobbering to the porcelain. It is an overglaze process which is re-fired to make the colour permanent. Dimensions 225 mm tall x 200 mm in diameter. Condition perfect. Circa 1780.
