Description

Town Hall Spire, 1930 by Edward S Watson (Australian 1899-1939). Drypoint, signed and dated in plate to lower left, editioned 2/50, titled and signed in pencil below image. In superb condition.  Born in Maryborough, Queensland, Edward S. Watson was an illustrator, cartoonist, printmaker and journalist. He served in the Great War and then worked for the Queensland Railways. He worked as a cartoonist for the Brisbane “Courier”, the “Daily Standard” and the “Queenslander.” During this time, he produced drawings, prints and paintings of prominent Brisbane personalities and buildings around Greater Brisbane. Watson had a died young and only produced a small body of work.
There can be no doubt as to the identity of this building. This is ofcourse, the Brisbane City Hall, with its distinctive clock tower officially opened on the 8th of April 1930. This piece predates that opening as it is dated March 1930. The foreground view appears to be an alleyway long gone. A wonderful historical etching of 20th century Brisbane .  Framed.
