Mentmore Sèvres

A pair of Sèvres plates have been decorating a livingroom in Geelong since they were purchased from The Connoisseur’s Store, Melbourne in the 1970’s. Hard-paste and bearing the date letter for 1776, along with the artist’s mark for Antoine Buteux, they are classic examples of Sèvres’ superb porcelains. Sèvres was the French Royal manufactury, and still exists, making very exclusive & expensive pieces for those with the desire for the best. Their early pieces are very desirable, often imitated but never equalled. Not exactly common, plates like this would have come from large aristocratic services, and do turn up from time to time – but what makes this pair stand out is their provenance.

Their owner recalled the dealer telling them they had come from the ‘Mentmore Sale’, known in the trade as the ‘Sale of the Century’ – a record setting 9-day sale of the extravagant contents of the Rothschild mansion Mentmore. Amongst the extraordinary art, antiques, silver, furniture, porcelain… was a splendid array of Sèvres, and investigating the catalogue we find lot 2114 is a match:

“A set of ten hard paste plates painted with flowers… crossed L’s mark in blue and puce, most with date letter Y”.

This pair made their way to Geelong, Australia…. I wonder where the others ended up?

We are pleased to have Hagerty’s Silver Polish in stock.

This English-made product is our tried & tested polish, as used by Moorabool for several decades. It’s a pleasure to see even the blackest silver shine, with the application of the reddish paste via the included sponge, or a toothbrush for getting into the fine detail. Just add water, and let it froth up – buff it, rinse in clean water, and dry your sparkling silver piece with a soft cloth.

Works great on cutlery!

We can post to you.

SHIPPING – remember, we ship world-wide at the most reasonable rate possible.

In Australia – a small box (eg. a cup & saucer) to Sydney costs around $20, Melbourne $15

All professionally wrapped by us, and fully insured.  Ask for a quote for anywhere in the world…
