Our second major catalogue of the year marks the 200th anniversary of Louis de Freycinet’s arrival in Western Australia. See item 21 for the wonderful Hydrographical Atlas from this voyage. This was Louis’ second visit, his first was as the cartographer-surveyor for the Baudin expedition, a fine account of which is included (see item 2), as well as the only published portrait of him (see item 18).

We are pleased to present Travel, a list containing over 70 books and maps from the last three centuries describing the geography and ethnography of regions on all continents, and European discoveries by land and sea across the globe.

Highlights include a rare French 18th century children’s board game in the form of a Mappe-Monde; examples of both the coloured and non-coloured editions of White’s First Fleet account, Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales (1790); a Philips’ floor globe for merchant shippers (1925); and a wide selection of maps depicting most parts of the world.

The Johnston Collection’s annual Summer | Christmas exhibition HOME MADE GOOD opens next month continuing our tradition of collaborations with contemporary makers.

This year we have commissioned mostly Melbourne-based artists and collectives to ‘create new works based on old objects’ with both contemporary and customary responses offering an ‘inspired’ interpretation of the Collection.

The silver service wine tasting

Twenty five lucky people were able to compare the taste of wine drunk from a silver goblet with that of a glass at the Australian Antique and Art Dealers Fair at the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Rozelle last month.

On offer were fine wines provided by Wine Selectors Australia and a variety of fine silver vessels to enable a direct comparison to be made.
