'The Wardrobe Raiders' Oil on board by John Ballantyne R.S.A.
John Ballantyne was a Scottish painter in oil, of portraits and historical genre, born at Kelso in 1815, dying Melksham (Wiltshire) in 1897. He studied at the Trustees’ Academy under Sir William Allan and Thomas Duncan, then studied in London, Paris and Rome. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy between 1831 and 1889. He was elected and Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (A.R.S.A.) in 1841 and a full Member (R.S.A.) in 1860.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Portrait Painters in Britain to 1920 and the Dictionary of Victorian Painters Vol II.
His work is represented in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the City of Glasgow and the City of Edinburgh Art Galleries.
