Tabriz is the capital of Azerbaidjan, Iran’s most populous province which borders both Turkey and the Caucasus. The province has a variety of ethnic, religious, and linguistic groups.
The name ‘Azerbaidjan’ (or land of fire) refers to the fire temples of the Zoroastrians who, until the Islamic conquest, made the area their centre.
Tabriz rose to prominence as an important market city during the latter half of the 19th century and a centre for urban workshop production, much of which was exported to Europe and America. This workshop woven piece displays a prominent red ground central medallion surrounded by scrolling branches and palmettes on a ivory ground.
