Description

Tabriz rose to prominence as an important market city and provincial capital of Azerbidjian in northern Persia during the latter half of the 19th century. With the burgeoning interest in oriental carpets in the west, Tabriz became one of the important centres of workshop production.
Carpets or rugs of this type with soft, mellow brown/madder and ivory tones in the field and finely executed weaving are often attributed to a reputed master weaver Hadj-Jalili from the nearby township of Marand. No carpets appear signed but the name Hadj-Jalili has become synonymous with the finest of Tabriz weavings from the latter part of the 19th century.
