Description
This finely woven Indian dhurrie was made (pre 1880) for the 56th West Essex Regiment of Foot, nicknamed the Pompadours because of the purple facings on their uniform, claimed by some soldiers to be the colour of Madam de Pompadour's underwear. The Pompadours were active between 1755 to 1881 and saw service in the Seven Years' War, the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars, the Crimean War and the Napoleonic Wars. 1.77 x 2.20 m.
