Description

An exceptional Arts and Crafts period Silver plated on nickel trivet, featuring a hand made and hand painted tile by 19th century British painter George Cartlidge. The tile is embossed verso, by the maker, Sherwin & Cotton. Circa 1890 - 1900 and depicts a bull terrier dog portrait. The trivet frames the tile nicely with a scalloped edge and sits on spun ball feet.  George Cartlidge - Trained at Hanley School of Art (1878) and taught art before working for Sherwin & Cotton (1882-1900) and then setting up his own company Adams & Cartlidge (Ltd.). Trivet measures 152 mm x 152 mm and stands 30 mm tall with the tile roughly 19 mm thick. The trivet is in excellent condition, with a crazed surface to the tile, which is normal and adds to its appearance.
As a dog lover I find this piece to be particularly interesting, as it depicts the Bull Terrier as it looked  when the breed was first fixed by James Hinks in the mid 19th century. The breed standard has changed somewhat since this tile was painted.
A rare find and something special for the canine antique enthusiast.

Price: $500.
