Description

A rare and exceptional Royal Crown Derby cabinet plate, painted by Desire Leroy, dated 1906, of Royal gadroon shape with a richly decorated border, a cobalt blue ground, highlighted with gilding, turquoise and white jewelling, six cartouches painted with various summer fruits, the central reserve painted with exotic birds in a landscape, signed, red and impressed marks to verso and bearing the Royal Warrant. Desire Leroy is regarded as the most distinguished artist to have ever worked at the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company. He was born in France in 1840 and at the age of 11 was apprenticed to Sevres, the French National Works. He soon rose to prominence as one of the leading artists. In 1874 he migrated to England to be employed at Minton. Minton exhibited various of his works at the 1878 Exposition Universelle, Paris. In 1890 Leroy was retained as the Art director and designer at the Royal Crown Derby porcelain works, which gained the Royal warrant in that year.
