This unique vase was conceived and made in 1875 expressly to be exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1878 in Paris.
The vase was modelled by James Hadley under the personal direction of Mr. R. W. Binns. The body of the vase is decorated with Renaissance motifs centred by cameos depicting Michelangelo Buonarotti and Luca Della Robbia respectively. James Hadley in his modeling and James Callowhill in his “Raphaelesque” colouring of this vase have superbly emulated the techniques of Della Robbia. The gilding in ‘coloured metals’ is by Josiah Davis.
