Description

Greenstone Cootamundi Taino culture, West Indies.
This is a very fine depiction of the small furred animal that played a large part in the religious ceremonies of the villages. This portable sculpture gave prestige to its owner, usually the village chief. Made from a soft pale green stone that has darkened (oxidized?) over the past 5-600 years to its present grey – green.
