Terracotta
32.0 cm

Burnished terracotta Haripunjaya style head of buddha Shakyamuni. With half-closed heavy lidded down cast eyes, ridged arching brows, broad nose, pouting smile and elongated earlobes. The usnisha surrounded by applied conical spiral locks of hair. The Mon artists would use moulds to shape the overall forum, then engrave and apply the final details before firing. This not only made production efficient but additionally made it possible to produce images with a uniformity and scale needed to adorn the niches of temples and stupas of the region. 
Northern Thailand, Late 12th -14th century.
