An Exceptional Pair of French Louis XVI Style Patinated and Gilt Bronze Three-Light Candelabra, after Clodion. Circa 1830.

This exceptional pair of French Louis XVI style three-light candelabra beautifully reflects the enduring influence of the celebrated French sculptor Clodion (Claude Michel, 1738–1814), whose playful representations of mythological children and bacchanalian figures became synonymous with the elegance of late eighteenth-century French decorative arts. Each candelabrum is centred by a finely modelled patinated bronze putto, delicately crowned with ivy and portrayed in animated movement while supporting gracefully scrolling, mercury-gilded bronze candle branches. The contrast between the deep, richly patinated figures and the luminous gilt bronze creates a striking visual balance, highlighting the remarkable quality of the bronze casting and chasing. The three elegantly curving candle arms emerge naturally from richly modelled acanthus foliage, terminating in finely fluted Louis XVI candle sockets. Every element demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship of the Parisian bronze workshops, where sculptors, modellers and bronze founders collaborated to produce works of extraordinary refinement. The figures stand upon finely cast gilt bronze socles enriched with classical ornament, raised on white marble bases that provide both architectural stability and visual elegance. The harmonious combination of patinated bronze, gilt bronze and marble reflects one of the most admired decorative compositions of the nineteenth century.Inspired by the sculptural genius of Clodion, these magnificent candelabra celebrate the revival of eighteenth-century French taste during the nineteenth century. Rather than reproducing the past, they reinterpret it with exceptional artistic sensitivity, creating works that possess both sculptural presence and practical function.Whether displayed upon a Louis XVI commode, flanking a cartel clock, or forming the focal point of a grand dining table or cheminée, these remarkable candelabra offer a level of elegance and theatricality that continues to enrich both traditional and contemporary interiors.Presented in excellent condition, retaining their beautifully preserved patinated bronze figures, richly gilded bronze candle branches and original marble bases, this distinguished pair represents an exceptional example of nineteenth-century French decorative art inspired by one of France’s greatest sculptors.
