A Fine French Gilt-Bronze Mantel Clock by Vincenti & Cie
France, circa 1855–1860
A beautifully modelled French gilt-bronze mantel clock of generous proportions, executed in the Louis XV / Rococo Revival taste, the movement by the celebrated clockmaker Vincenti & Cie. The richly sculptural case is conceived in the exuberant rococo manner, with sweeping asymmetrical scrolls, acanthus leaves, floral ornament and pierced architectural elements rising from an elaborate shaped base. The composition is crowned by a finely cast seated putto holding a sundial, an allegorical reference to the passage and measurement of time. The circular white enamel dial is delicately domed and enclosed behind a glazed bezel, with Roman numerals for the hours, an outer Arabic minute track and finely pierced gilt hands. The French twin-train movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell and is stamped “Vincenti & Cie – Médaille d’Argent 1855.” Vincenti & Cie was among the important makers of French clock movements during the nineteenth century and received a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. The clock retains its pendulum and key and is recorded as being in running condition. The combination of the finely chased gilt-bronze case, allegorical putto and strongly sculptural rococo design makes this an especially decorative example of French Second Empire horology, reflecting the nineteenth-century revival of the great decorative traditions of eighteenth-century France.
