Description

Samuel Elyard 1817-1910
Watercolour and Gouache on Paper
52.0 x 62.0 x 7.0 cm

Samuel Elyard (British 1817-1910) was a landscape painter, born on the Isle of Wight, later moving to Sydney, Australia in 1821. This detailed watercolour, heighten with body colour, is titled verso “Yard of Nowra” which has an interesting meaning. Nowra is Aboriginal for camp, whilst yard is an old English term used to describe an area surrounding a building or an activity. As this painting portrays three men at what appears to be a camp fire, it could be interpreted as Camping Area Nowra.

Elyard studied under John Skinner Prout and Conrad Martens, he specialised in landscape painting both in oils and watercolour. Elyard initially lived in Sydney but he later moved to the south coast town of Nowra in the Shoalhaven region of NSW. He lived in the area for the rest of his life and is considered to be the regions most famous painter. A prolific painter, in 1847 Elyard had a Sydney exhibition, followed later with an exhibition in Paris in 1857.

Elyard’s work is held in several institutions including the Art gallery of NSW, State Library of NSW and the National Library of Australia. His works are also on permanent display at the Nowra Museums Hanlloran Gallery. This is testament to the importance of Elyard’s work as he recorded both the historical and cultural landscape of the new colony.

Condition: The painting is in a good condition commesurate with age and presents very well, with bright, strong colours, no foxing or discolouration apparent. It has slight scuff to edges which does not show and are under the mat, there is also a very small hole, bottom left and a small crease top left in tree foliage, which are not very visable. It is in a gilt frame with a gold mat and wooden gold slip. It is glazed with museum quality anti-reflective invisible glass "artglass AR70" which has UV Block of 70% Visible Light Transmission of 99% and a Reflection of 1%.
