This exceptional French Louis XV period cartel clock, retaining its original matching wall bracket, is a superb example of the elegance and artistic achievement that characterised the finest Parisian decorative arts of the eighteenth century. The waisted case is beautifully decorated in the celebrated Vernis Martin technique, displaying finely hand-painted floral decoration and charming pastoral scenes upon a vibrant green ground. Richly adorned with finely chased and mercury-gilded ormolu mounts of flowing rocaille design, the clock embodies the movement, grace and asymmetry synonymous with the Louis XV period. The original white enamel dial is signed Guillaume Gille, à Paris, one of the distinguished Parisian clockmakers working during the eighteenth century. The dial retains its elegant Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five-minute divisions and beautifully pierced gilt bronze hands, all framed within an exquisitely modelled ormolu bezel. Complete with its original matching Vernis Martin wall bracket, the ensemble was designed to be appreciated as a single decorative composition. Examples retaining their original brackets have become increasingly scarce, making complete cartel clocks particularly desirable amongst collectors of French horology. Adding further distinction, this remarkable clock was acquired from the private collection of the Château de Ternant, France, providing an exceptional provenance and reinforcing its connection to the great French château tradition. Created through the combined talents of the horologist, bronzier and Vernis Martin decorator, this clock represents far more than a functional timepiece. It is an outstanding work of eighteenth-century French decorative art, combining exceptional craftsmanship, historical significance and enduring elegance. Presented in excellent condition, retaining its beautifully preserved Vernis Martin decoration, finely chased mercury-gilded ormolu mounts and exceptional decorative presence.
