Description

An Exceptional French Régence Period Giltwood Mirror. Circa 1715-1720.

An Exceptional French Régence Period Giltwood Mirror. Circa 1715–1720.

This exceptional French Régence period giltwood mirror is a magnificent expression of the transition between the grandeur of Louis XIV and the elegance that would later define the Louis XV period.Hand carved from solid wood and richly finished in original water gilding, the frame displays the remarkable artistry of early eighteenth-century French woodcarvers. Every element has been sculpted with extraordinary precision, creating a composition that is both architectural and wonderfully fluid. The openwork crest is crowned by a beautifully carved antique urn overflowing with flowers, framed by scrolling foliage, pierced ornament and richly modelled acanthus leaves. This elegant arrangement symbolises abundance and prosperity while announcing the increasingly naturalistic style that characterised the Régence period. The finely carved surround is enriched with delicate floral ornament and scrolling foliage, leading the eye effortlessly towards the central mirror plate. Unlike the heavier symmetry of the Louis XIV period, the Régence style introduced greater movement and freedom of composition, laying the foundations for the exuberant Rococo designs that would soon follow.More than simply a functional mirror, this is an outstanding work of architectural sculpture. Designed to reflect both light and space, mirrors of this quality became an essential feature of the great French hôtels particuliers and country châteaux, where they transformed interiors through their scale, elegance and decorative presence.Today, over three centuries after its creation, this remarkable mirror continues to possess the same commanding presence for which it was originally commissioned. Whether displayed above a cheminée, within a grand entrance hall or incorporated into a contemporary interior, it remains a timeless statement of French craftsmanship and refinement.Presented in excellent antique condition, retaining its rich gilded surface and remarkable sculptural detail, this Régence mirror represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic example of early eighteenth-century French decorative art.
