This exceptional one of a kind high karat gold cross was made at the turn of the 19th Century circa 1800. This
beautiful cross patty/formy is made completely in cannetille, the
entire pendant is made by hand using the finest imaginable hand made
gold wire. Each wire delicately crafted and joined together to form the
intricate lace like lattice of the pendant. From the top the cross is
adorned with a central daisy motif the cross decorated similarly with
anemone or carnation flowers in solid gold lace. At the center
of the gold lace daisy at the heart of this superb cross is a single
natural seed pearl which is silver white in color with thick nacre and a
smooth surface. Th pendant cross is made from solid 20K yellow
gold. Higher than 18K gold was a necessary requirement by the few master
goldsmiths who could produce these jewels. Cannetille jewelry
was made only for a short period of time at the end of the 18th century.
True cannetille pieces made in this intricate manner which is orders of
magnitude finer than filigree work is truly rare to see. This spectacular piece is signed on the reverse with a Master Jewelers mark. It was made by Wilhelm Ludwig Haas of Copenhagen. It is of museum quality. The cross measures 1 3/4" long including the cannetille lace bale by 1 1/4" wide approximately (44mm x 32mm). It weighs 7.4 grams. The
cross is over 200 years old. It is in excellent condition for it's age
and authenticity. On the top section of the Maltese cross there is a
single gold twist forming a leaf like design which is missing to the
left of one of the lace carnation flowers. The jump link joining the
cross to the bale has some early solder closing its ends - I believe
this jump link was most likely closed but not soldered when the cross
was made. This piece presents beautifully and is ready to gift or to
wear. I can just imagine this as part of the most gorgeous
wedding ensemble - that heirloom jewel that is worn on special occasions
and can be enjoyed each day and handed down to future generations to
treasure. An appraisal is included with the purchase of this rare Georgian pendant cross. It shall be sent in a presentation box for safe keeping. The photographs form part of the description of this special piece.
