Description

15ct. Yellow gold and diamond pendant/brooch. The eight pointed star has a royal blue viterous enamel applied to the leading edge. The piece is star set with a central old round brilliant cut natural diamond with an approximate weight of .90ct with a colour of F and a clarity of SI2. The central natural diamond is surrounded by eight .25ct old cut natural diamonds with a colour of F and a clarity of SI2. Total weight 2.00ct. The bale of the pendant is also grain set with one .25ct old cut diamond with a colour of F and a clarity of SI2. The Piece is stamped McBean of Melbourne. Circa 1888. The firm of James Mcbean and Son were a firm of watch makers and jewellers. Founded by James McBean of Inverness, Scotland, who came to Australia in 1853. His business at 21 Collins Street soom prospered. Following McBean's retirement in 1890, control of the firm passed to his son, William. An account of McBean and Son's substantial premises at 96 Elizabeth Street has been present in the Cyclopedia of Victoria (1904). While primarily retailers, they also produced much of their own jewellery.
