Cuthbert Julian Orde was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, on the 18th December 1888. He was the son of Sir Julian Walter Orde a British industrialist. Orde had always considered himself an artist since his youth, establishing a studio in Paris in the 1920s. During the World War 11 he commissioned by the Air Ministry to produce sixty-four portraits of World War 11 pilots which were later published as a book.
Orde also painted a series of high profile portraits that include a 1940 painting of Sir Winston Churchill, Group Captain Douglas Bader and Laura Lenox-Conyngham to name just a few.
After the war Orde became an established portrait, landscape and still life painter who exhibited at the Alpine Club Gallery; Chenil and New Chenil Gallery; Goupil Gallery; Liverpool Walker Art Gallery; Royal Academy; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Paris Salon between 1921 and 1961. He produced a lot of this work from his studio and home at 1 Durham Place, Chelsea, London. He mostly signed his works 'Orde' in distinctive capital letters.
This is a lovely oil on board study of a Rosé bottle and glass, with luscious thick bold brush marks defining the subject matter. Painted on a Reeves double primed 10" x 7" inch hardboard panel.
