Circle of Edgar Payne (American 1883-1947), Fishing Boats Chioggia. This small oil on board panel appears to be a compositional study for a larger work, the piece is unsigned, ( this is not unusual when considering the size along with the work already being titled lower left). Payne often painted “en plein air” along with numerous sketches from which he would later reference for his studio paintings, many of these studies contain elements that would together be combined to compose the final work

The Title lower left reads "Chioggia", being one of the Italian ports upon which Payne created compositional studies portraying the fleets of tuna and sardine boats that were ever present along the Italian and French Coastal towns.The compositional structure and crop of the work is reflective of Paynes advanced understanding of light, shape and colour, with this being a significant element of his practice ,Payne was often referred to as "a master of Landscape composition and colour".

Condition: The work is in very good condition having recently undertaken a minor surface clean. Glazed under Artglass AR 99 Conservation grade anti-reflective glass and framed within a high quality reproduction frame.
