'Encounter in the Street' oil on board c1960 signed Bill Coleman
William (Bill) Coleman was born in Ballarat in 1922, dying in 1993. He was a painter and printmaker, studying at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1940, and under George Bell between 1948 and 1954. He exhibited at many group shows in Australia and overseas from 1945, and a solo exhibition at the Hamer-Matthew Gallery, Sydney in 1989. He was awarded a Diploma for the best ten in composition at the 28th Grand Prix International, in France, 1977. A major retrospective exhibition in 1986 at the Bendigo, Ballarat and Sale Art Galleries (Victoria, Australia) brought critical acclaim.
His work is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the New York Public Library and many Australian regional Galleries.
