“Aquarium – Paradise Fishes”
Oil on board dated 1956 by Michael Kmit
Michael Kmit was born in 1910 in Ukraine, arriving in Sydney in
1950, dying there in 1981. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and
taught painting in Lvov in Poland and Landeck in Austria, he also worked in
Italy, Paris & Vienna, before arriving in Australia. His work combining
Byzantine iconography with peasant craft, soon brought him into prominence. He
was awarded the Blake Prize in 1953 and the Sulman Prize in 1957.
His work is represented
in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New
South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Tasmanian Museum and Art
Gallery.
