Gold
A nineteenth-century Swiss fourteen-carat gold snuff box. Of curved rectangular form, the exterior with cast foliate scrolls on a stippled ground, the hinged cover decorated with engine-turned alternating crescent-shaped bands, the interior struck with multiple Swiss control marks, including '14', and maker's mark, 'S&C' within a lozenge-shaped surround. Geneva, circa 1800-30. Dimensions: length 8.5cm. Width 5.7cm. Height: 1.2cm. Weight: 76 grams. Condition: Excellent gauge. Definition of the detail of the decoration is lovely and crisp. The cover snaps shut well. The hinge is good and strong. Some scuffing noticeable, mentioned for accuracy. Note: Eighteenth-century Swiss hallmarks for gold and silver items varied by region and were not standardised across the country until the late nineteenth century. This piece has been tested to confirm a gold purity of at least 14ct gold.
